The Boat Parade Reaches Balboa Island Twice and Mariners' Mile Last: Picking Your Spot by the 2026 Timetable

  • October 29, 2026

A table at Woody's Wharf and a table at Rusty Pelican on the same December night put you at the same parade nearly two hours apart. The official 2026 route map has the lead boats passing Woody's Wharf at 6:51 p.m. and Rusty Pelican at 8:43 p.m. Both restaurants face the harbor and see the same boats. The only difference is where they sit on the loop.

The 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade runs Wednesday through Sunday, December 16 to 20, 2026. The route and schedule page says it starts and finishes at the tip of Lido Isle and begins at about 6:30 p.m. each night. The finish is listed at 9:00 p.m. That leaves two and a half hours and 57 numbered checkpoints. Pick a spot on the water and the timetable decides when you eat dinner, when the kids go to bed and which sky show you get while you wait.

The first 35 minutes stay on the Peninsula side

From Lido Isle, the boats work east along the bayside of the Peninsula. The 2026 map lists these times:

  • 6:35 p.m., Lido Isle Yacht Club
  • 6:45 p.m., Lido Isle Bridge
  • 6:49 p.m., tip of Lido Peninsula and the Rhine Channel
  • 6:52 p.m., Peninsula Village, home to Buona Forchetta, CasaDami and Shorebird
  • 6:54 p.m., Marina Park
  • 6:57 p.m., 15th Street Beach
  • 7:02 p.m., 10th Street Beach
  • 7:05 p.m., Newport Harbor Yacht Club

The early stretch suits households that want the parade over before a school-night bedtime. Marina Park is also where opening night happens. The organizer calls the park at 1600 W. Balboa Blvd. the largest public viewing location on the route. On Wednesday, December 16, it hosts a free opening event that starts at 4 p.m. and includes the fourth annual Holiday Market, run with Vogels Vibes, with more than 35 local makers, food vendors, live music and kids' activities. The market runs until 8 p.m. The organizer's two pages give slightly different pass times for the park. The Marina Park page says 6:45 p.m., and the route map says 6:54 p.m. Plan for "just before 7" and you are covered either way.

Opening night also starts with fireworks off Newport Pier at about 6:15 p.m., if federal, state and local safety guidelines allow. For a Peninsula family, that makes Wednesday the most crowded and fullest of the five nights. Fireworks at 6:15, boats at Marina Park around 6:50, and the market still running afterward.

The Fun Zone gets a drone show on each side of the parade

By 7:14 the parade reaches the Balboa Village waterfront, passing Newport Landing Restaurant, Balboa Boat Rentals and Newport Landing Sportfishing. At 7:15 it passes the Balboa Peninsula ferry landing, the Balboa Fun Zone, and Harborside Restaurant at the Balboa Pavilion. Davey's Locker and Catalina Passenger Service follow at 7:16. The organizer points first-time viewers to the Fun Zone, noting that admission is free.

The drone schedule is built around that 7:15 pass. Every night, the show at Peninsula Park near the Fun Zone runs at 6:45 p.m. and again at 8:00 p.m. A Balboa Village evening can therefore go like this: drones at 6:45, boats half an hour later, then a second show at 8:00 after the parade has turned toward China Cove and Balboa Island. The OC Register's coverage of the 2025 parade already described nightly drone shows at both locations, so this is the second season people can plan around them.

After the Fun Zone, the boats round the end of the Peninsula. Peninsula Point Beach is listed at 7:25, Pirate's Cove at 7:32, and Channel Reef and China Cove at 7:33. The parade then heads up past the U.S. Coast Guard at 7:37, Balboa Yacht Club at 7:38 and Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club at 7:41. Visit Newport Beach lists China Cove Beach and Lookout Point among its viewing areas, which brings the Corona del Mar side into the 7:30 window.

Balboa Island sees the parade twice

Apart from the tip of Lido Isle, where the parade starts and finishes, the Balboa Island Bridge is the only checkpoint the map lists twice. The boats go under the Balboa Island Bridge at 7:45, circle the island and come back under the same bridge at 8:11. On the way around, the map lists these times:

  1. 7:45 p.m., Balboa Island Bridge
  2. 7:48 p.m., Little Island Beach
  3. 7:51 p.m., Little Island Point
  4. 7:54 p.m., South Bayfront and Grand Canal
  5. 8:01 p.m., Balboa Island Ferry Landing
  6. 8:03 p.m., Collins Island
  7. 8:07 p.m., North Bayfront
  8. 8:11 p.m., Balboa Island Bridge, alongside Newport Beach Yacht Club

From the bridge you see the first boats at 7:45 and the same boats 26 minutes later, with the rest of the parade passing in between. On the bayfront walks, the island's two sides get the lead boats 13 minutes apart, South Bayfront at 7:54 and North Bayfront at 8:07. A Marine Avenue dinner can start after 7:00 and still finish before the boats reach the water.

The ferry crossing is on the route at both ends. The parade passes the Peninsula landing at 7:15 and the island landing at 8:01. The Balboa Island Ferry posts daily hours of 6:30 a.m. to midnight, which covers the whole parade window. The operator is the place to confirm how crossings run while the boats are going by.

The last hour belongs to Mariners' Mile and Lido Village

After the island, the parade goes past Harbor Island at 8:18 and reaches the PCH Bridge at 8:26. Tavern House Kitchen + Bar and SOL Mexican Cocina are listed at that checkpoint. The next times are Bay Shores Community Beach at 8:30, Balboa Bay Resort at 8:35, Orange Coast College's crew base at 8:38 and Newport Sea Base at 8:39.

The second drone site is timed for this stretch. Balboa Bay Club shows run at 8:15 p.m. every night, about 20 minutes before the boats reach the resort. The early show is at 6:15 p.m., except opening night, when it moves to 6:00. Diners at A+O Restaurant | Bar at Balboa Bay Resort, which the organizer lists at 8:35, get the drones and the parade in one sitting.

Newport Sea Base at 1931 West Coast Highway sells reserved waterfront seating. Seating opens at 7:00 p.m., the organizer says the parade is visible at 8:37 p.m., and limited parking costs $25 per vehicle. That is a long wait in December air, so it works best for groups that come for the evening and not just the half hour of boats.

Mariners' Mile comes next. The map lists City Cruises and the Mariners' Mile checkpoint at 8:42, Rusty Pelican at 8:43, Billy's at the Beach and Louie's by the Bay at 8:44, and The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar at 8:45. Lido Marina Village follows at 8:46, then Malibu Farm and Lido Bottle Works at 8:47, HanaHaus at 8:48, Lido Park and the Lido Bridge at 8:50 and Via Lido North Genoa Beach at 8:53, before the finish at the tip of Lido Isle at 9:00. The organizer warns that its Dine & Watch restaurants fill up early. Along Mariners' Mile, that means an 8 p.m. reservation, not the usual 6:30 holiday dinner.

The timetable at a glance

Where you watch Lead boats arrive What else is scheduled nearby The evening it suits
Tip of Lido Isle 6:30 p.m. start, 9:00 p.m. finish Lido Isle Yacht Club pass at 6:35 Seeing the boats leave and return
Peninsula Village, Woody's Wharf 6:51 to 6:52 p.m. Pier fireworks at 6:15 on opening night Done early, home by 8
Marina Park About 6:45 to 6:54 p.m. Holiday Market 4 to 8 p.m., December 16 Families with young kids
Balboa Fun Zone and Pavilion 7:15 p.m. Peninsula Park drones at 6:45 and 8:00 Free viewing with two sky shows
China Cove 7:33 p.m. None listed A quieter middle slot
Balboa Island 7:45 and 8:11 p.m. at the bridge Ferry landing pass at 8:01 Dinner first, parade second
Balboa Bay Resort 8:35 p.m. Balboa Bay Club drones at 8:15 Drones and boats in one sitting
Mariners' Mile and Lido Marina Village 8:42 to 8:48 p.m. None listed A late dinner reservation

The organizer recommends arriving early wherever you watch. Viewing from shore is free, city parking lots stay open during the parade, and the directions and parking page warns that lots fill quickly.

Boats on the water run on the same clock

Cruises are scheduled around the loop too. Newport Landing runs parade cruises all five nights, departing at 5:30, 7:05 and 8:30 p.m., and its 2026 page lists a 75-minute public cruise starting at $39. Newport Harbor Boat Rentals offers 2.5-hour private electric-boat rentals on parade nights. A Wednesday or Thursday costs $275 to $350, a Friday $395 to $625, and a Saturday or Sunday $550 to $775. The top weekend rate is more than double the top weekday rate. The weekend premium is a price difference only, because the route and checkpoint times are the same all five nights.

Electric Boat Rental offers a four-hour rental starting at 5 p.m. or a two-hour rental starting at 5:30 p.m. The two-hour boat comes back around 7:30, with the parade only an hour into a route that ends at 9:00. Keep that in mind when choosing between the two.

The December dates to put on the calendar now

Boat entries for 2026 are already closed. Homeowners can still enter the Ring of Lights, the parade's home and dock decorating contest. The entry fee is $35, forms are due by noon on Friday, December 11, and judging is Monday, December 14, so decorations need to be up by then.

Date What happens
Friday, December 11, noon Ring of Lights entry deadline
Monday, December 14 Ring of Lights judging
Wednesday, December 16 Opening night, Marina Park market from 4 p.m., Newport Pier fireworks about 6:15 p.m.
December 16 to 20 Parade nightly, about 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.

A bayfront home is judged on December 14 and then seen from the water by the parade at the time its stretch of harbor sits on the 2026 map. If you own on the bay, are thinking about leasing a harbor-view home for next season, or want to know how a home's spot on this loop affects its December appeal, Jade Larney can talk through it with you.
