Every July, Costa Mesa does something few Southern California cities still do: it throws a fair that the whole county actually shows up for. The 2026 OC Fair — the 136th — runs July 17 through August 16, twenty-three days under the theme "Your Adventure Awaits," and if the last few summers are any guide, more than a million people will pass through the gates on Fair Drive. Some of them will be my neighbors. A surprising number of them, by September, start looking at Costa Mesa listings.
This is the guide I give friends who ask how to do the fair properly — the money moves, what's actually new this year, which nights the Amphitheatre is the best ticket in Orange County, and what fair season looks like from the porches of the neighborhoods that host it.

Where to buy tickets — the Fair and the shows
Admission is advance-purchase online this year, and the popular weekend nights do sell out, so it is worth buying before you leave the house instead of trusting the gate. Here is exactly where each ticket lives:
- Fair admission: buy at ocfair.com — $13 Wednesday–Thursday, $18 Friday–Sunday, $10 for seniors 65+, $9 for kids 6–12, free for children 5 and under.
- Going more than twice — the Every Day Passport: $60 for unlimited visits across the whole run, also at ocfair.com. It pays for itself on the third trip.
- Concerts at the Pacific Amphitheatre: buy at pacamp.com. Every reserved concert seat includes free same-day Fair admission — often the best-value way through the gate all summer.
- The Hangar and Action Sports Arena: included with Fair admission; nightly lineups are posted at pacamp.com and ocfair.com.
- Weekday savers: Smart Start early entry ($11, Wednesday–Thursday, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.) and Unlimited Ride Wristbands (Wednesday–Thursday) are both at ocfair.com.
The money moves nobody tells visitors
The Fair went fully advance-purchase this year, so there is no day-of gate discount to wait for — the cheapest admission is simply the day you pick. Wednesdays and Thursdays run $13 against $18 on weekends, which quietly saves a family of four twenty dollars for going midweek, when the midway is breathable anyway.
The $5 Taste of Fair runs daily until 5 p.m. — smaller portions of the famous fair food at a price that lets you actually try five things instead of committing your whole appetite (and wallet) to one turkey leg. Arrive at 11, graze until 5, and you've had the full culinary tour for what one full-size funnel cake costs after dark.
A concert ticket IS a fair ticket. Every Pacific Amphitheatre concert or reserved seat includes free same-day fair admission. If there's a show you want, buying the concert and getting the fair free is the best-value ticket of the Orange County summer.
Families: four KP's Kids Place locations serve $10 kids meals this year, with vouchers available for advance online purchase — one of the few fair expenses you can lock in before you walk through the gate.

What's actually new in 2026
REWIND: VHS Comeback is the year's featured exhibit — hand-painted movie poster reproductions, soundtrack displays, and live-painting demonstrations. If you grew up in a Blockbuster household, budget an hour.
The Explorium at OC Promenade brings a Sand and Sea experience built around Orange County's own coastline, including a hands-on touch tank — quietly the best included-with-admission stop on the grounds for anyone under ten.
OC Fair & Share puts collection boxes near the exits where kids can donate extra carnival prizes to local children in need — the rare fair tradition that costs nothing and teaches something.
How locals do the fair
Go Wednesday or Thursday. Admission is $5 cheaper, the midway is breathable, and the food lines move. If a weekend is your only option, arrive at 11 a.m. sharp — the gap between an 11 a.m. Saturday arrival and a 3 p.m. one is roughly an hour of your life spent on Fair Drive.
Better yet, skip the $15 lot entirely. The fair is bikeable, and the neighborhoods around the fairgrounds — Mesa del Mar, College Park, Mesa Verde — treat fair season as a front-porch event: ride in, walk in, wave at the visitors idling in the parking queue. Coming from Newport or Huntington? Inland routes (Adams, Harbor) beat PCH-to-Fair-Drive every single evening of fair season.
Coming without wading into the parking crush? The OC Fair Express runs about $2 each way from the Anaheim ARTIC transit hub straight to the main gate, and kids ride free — the calmest way in on a sold-out Saturday.
If you do end up driving, there is one real chokepoint to plan around: the 55 freeway's Del Mar/Fair Drive exit is the tightest knot in the whole network on a Friday or Saturday night. Locals coming from the south side skip it and approach from Arlington Drive instead, and anyone crossing town should treat Bristol Street between South Coast Plaza and the fairgrounds as effectively closed after about 3 p.m. on weekend afternoons.
Fair season quietly reshuffles where to eat, too. With the county's dinner crowd pointed at Fair Drive, the newer west-side rooms get easier midweek — Highball and the fourteen-seat Naisho Omakase, Diner Noche tucked inside Hola Adios, and Pacific Pearl Cafe over at The Met all sit far enough from the gates to run normally on a show night. A Wednesday or Thursday table that would be tough in June suddenly opens up.
A resident's week, sketched
Owning here in July and August is, in a real way, an information advantage — the fair does not take the city away for twenty-three days so much as concentrate the crowd into a knowable footprint and schedule. A sensible local week reads about like this:
- Monday and Tuesday — the fair is dark. Run the errands you have been putting off; Fair Drive behaves like an ordinary street.
- Wednesday — the cheapest day at $13, with ride wristbands. Going with kids? Go now. If not, book that west-side dinner while the tourists head east.
- Thursday — same weekday pricing, same easier reservations. A good night to pair a Hangar set with an early table.
- Friday — push errands before 4 p.m.; concert traffic starts stacking on the Del Mar ramp by five.
- Saturday — assume Bristol by the fairgrounds is gone from 3 p.m. on. Want the fair itself? Take the Express or be through the gate before 1 p.m.
- Sunday — an 11 p.m. close and earlier easing. A late-afternoon visit followed by dinner on the west side is the move.

Here's the honest read from someone who works these streets: for forty-seven weeks a year, the OC Fair & Event Center is the quietest neighbor in Costa Mesa — a green buffer with markets, equestrian events, and concerts walking distance from some of the most livable blocks in Orange County. For five weeks, it's the county's living room. The neighborhoods that host it — Mesa del Mar's cul-de-sacs, College Park's mid-century streets, Mesa Verde across the way — trade a little July traffic for a year-round amenity most cities would zone half their budget to build.
