Every real summer weekend in Newport Beach has the same shape: mornings that belong to locals, afternoons that belong to everyone, and evenings on the water that remind you why you put up with the parking. Labor Day weekend is the last one of the season, and 2026 is serving a good one.

This year's guide goes wider than the city line. Newport is the home base, but the best long weekend borrows from the whole county, so here is the plan for September 4 through 7: the anchor events, a route for every kind of crew, the honest answer on fireworks, and where the happy hours actually are.

The anchor: Tunes at the Dunes, Friday through Sunday

Newport Dunes, tucked into the Back Bay just off PCH and Jamboree, runs its holiday weekend the way it should be run. Free concerts play on the sand from 5 to 8 p.m. nightly, September 4 through 6: Kelly Boyz opens Friday with country rock, Family Style brings soul and rock on Saturday, and Flashback Heart Attack closes Sunday with the '80s set that pulls every generation onto the same patch of beach. Food trucks and a full bar run from 2 to 8 p.m., the inflatable water park is open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday nights end with a movie on the beach at dusk. Admission is free; parking runs a $35 flat rate over the holiday weekend, so arrive early or ride the Back Bay loop in.

For families

• Make Saturday a Dunes day. Calm, lifeguarded lagoon water, the inflatable park until 6, dinner from the food trucks, live music at 5, and a movie on the sand after dark. One parking fee, a full day, everyone asleep by 9.
• Big Corona before 10 a.m. is the family beach play all weekend: real waves without Peninsula intensity, and fire rings if you claim one early for an evening s'mores run.
• Civil War Days in Huntington Beach (Sept 5 and 6) turns the park into a living-history camp with demonstrations both days. Sneaky-educational, plays like an outing.
• The Great Park balloon in Irvine is the reliable off-beach hour: the big orange balloon, the carousel, and room to run when everyone is sanded out.

• Rent the Duffy at golden hour. An electric boat, a picnic, and the harbor at 6 p.m. is still the best two-hour date in Orange County. Book the last slot of the day and idle past Lido Isle's docks on the way back.

Orange County saves its big civic fireworks for the Fourth, so no coastal city stages a public Labor Day show and the Angels are on the road all weekend. The one dependable sky show is at Disneyland in Anaheim, where Halloween Time began August 21 and the Halloween Screams nighttime spectacular runs with fireworks on select nights, so check the park calendar before building an evening around it. Closer to home, the night-sky move is simpler: a movie on the sand at the Dunes on Friday or Saturday, or a fire ring at Big Corona with the marine layer holding off.
